When I received an unexpected bonus from work, it didn’t take me long to decide what I wanted to spend it on. Being the huge movie buff that I am, I wanted to enhance my home theater system with a new HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) receiver. Since I am typically a careful spender, I decided to do quite a bit of research before heading out to buy. Given the amount of time I put into finding the best receiver, I decided to share my findings so that others looking to buy could use my research to their advantage.
What You Should Know When Buying a HDMI Receiver
The first part of my research was to determine what features were most important to me before even beginning to compare receivers. Below I have listed a few features that I feel are key when looking to purchase a new HDMI receiver.
- HDMI Audio Support
- Network Capability
- Extra Features
- THX Certification
- iPhone/iPod Compatible
- User Friendliness
Up until this point I had been limping along with an old receiver that lacked the HDMI feature. This was really getting to be a problem when watching new movies because my old receiver had difficulty detecting audio properly and sometimes this would cause the movie to skip or even not to play at all. Needless to say, my bonus couldn’t have come at a better time. The first receiver I decided to check out was the Onkyo TX-NR609 7.2 Channel Network THX Certified A/V Receiver. So come with me and I will tell you all you need to know about this Onkyo Receiver.
HDMI Audio Support
Since I love to watch movies, sound was a big factor in my purchase decision. That is why I wanted the latest in HDMI technology. In this area the Onkyo TX-NR609 doesn’t disappoint and comes with support for master-quality audio formats from Dolby and DTS, as well as the expanded surround sound of Audyssey DSX™ and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz, all of which ensure a top quality home theater experience.
When not watching movies I like to at least have some good music pumping through the speakers. The Onkyo TX-NR609 is network capable and allows you to stream your favorite music through a selection of Internet radio channels or access your music library from your pc. This way you can enjoy that same high quality sound while cooking or cleaning.
You could pretty much spend as much as you wanted on a receiver and maybe for those who have an unlimited budget that would work fine. I personally had a budget that I could not go over. Luckily the Onkyo TX-NR609 came in just under $400.00, making it well within my budget.
When I realized all the cool things I was going to be able to do with my new receiver, I wanted to get as many of those features as I could within my budget. The Onkyo TX-NR609 has plenty of great features for someone like me who likes to have a lot of versatility in products I purchase.

The TX-NR609 is also iPhone and iPod compatible, adding to the versatility of this great receiver. Plug your iPhone or iPod directly into the receiver to listen or view files.
